1993/07 Rockies trip - Waterton Lakes |

Saturday July 3rd
We crossed the border into Canada with no problems and headed for Waterton Lakes park. We were a little concerned that we might have trouble getting a space on Canada's big holiday weekend. About a mile from the campground, we blew a truck tyre. A whole chunk of tread had gone missing, leaving a hole that was definitely unpatchable. 
Still, not bad for 62000 miles of hard work, and luckily it did not happen at high speed or on a one lane mountain road.
After digging out the spare, we took the last trailer space in the campground.
We used the rain as an excuse to go and eat lunch at the Prince of Wales hotel, the one that sits on the hill overlooking Waterton Lake. The far end of the lake, mostly invisible on this murky day, is in the USA.We were lucky enough to get the table by the window, so we had a good view of the lake as well as a good lunch.
Afterwards, we set off for Red Rock canyon. Luckily, it looks pretty in the rain as the wet accentuates the colours. John and I hiked up through the wet and mud to see Blakiston Falls and met this mule deer along the 
way.
Later the weather dried enough for us all to take a short walk.
On our way back, there was more excitement as yet another bear was spotted. This time it was definitely a black 
bear. It was standing watching us, decided it didn't like us, and set off running on all fours. The two ladies grabbed the cameras and set off in vigorous pursuit, but the bear was camera-shy.
We also drove the park's other road to Cameron Lake, which is right on the US-Canada border. We hiked around to where the 
grizzlies' feeding patch starts and then got drowned as another storm rolled in over the mountain top.
