2000/02 Australia trip - Melbourne and Mulgrave |

We were up early again to pack for the plane trip and to get the camper back to the rental place. We were too early for them, and were worried about catching the plane, but eventually this lady turned up and drove us to the airport. We had a good flight over the Bass Strait to Melbourne, coming in over Wilson’s Promontory, a national park.
Melbourne was hot, in the 90s, and we had a very entertaining Russian taxi driver take us across town to the Britz rental place. He had been trying to get to Tasmania for a holiday but family and ferry disasters kept stopping him. The Melbourne Britz was like a bus station with hordes of customers, mainly Germans, and motor homes coming and going, very different from the small places we usually deal with. After a couple of hours wait, we were on our way in a Toyota HiTop camper van, very similar to those we used five years ago, but with a better engine and gearbox.
We had some interesting experiences at junctions that had dead traffic lights. In the US there are rules for how you deal with that, but we never worked out what the rules were for Melbourne. Apparently there was some sort of power workers strike going on at the same time as the heatwave.
