2004/02 Prom and the Wedding - Prom's Norman Bay |

Sunday February 8th
On Sunday the plan was for us all to go the ‘Prom” for the day. The Prom, or Wilson’s Promontory, is a national park about three hours from Melbourne, and Sandie and I were going to stay there for the rest of the week. However, there turned out to be too much to do for us all to fit in a day trip. In the end, the two of us finished our shopping and packing, and didn’t head out until after lunch. This meant that we got to the Prom in late afternoon, with just enough time to find a camping spot and get the camper set up.
The Prom is about 30 miles long and 15 miles wide, an area of granite mountains and beautiful beaches that pokes out into the Bass Strait and is connected to the mainland by the sandy Yanakie Isthmus. It’s full of wildlife and we saw emus, kangaroos, and wombats on the way in.
We ended up camping at Norman Bay, amongst the trees, just one set of dunes 
back from the beach, close enough to hear the sound of surf. The trees are coastal tea trees, a variety that grows over the trails and turns them into tunnels. We had time for a walk through the tunnels and out onto the beach to catch the last rays of the sunset. We felt a long way from Minnesota’s snow and ice.
