2004/02 Prom and the Wedding - Sealers Cove |

Thursday February 12th![]()
We had planned a long hike and decided to go even though Thursday began with a wet mist and showers. We drove up to the car park on Mount Oberon and began the hike down to Sealers Cove on the eastern shore of the park. The hike begins with a climb up to Windy Saddle and then drops steeply down though the rain forest. It was almost dark under the trees and everything was wringing wet with the mist. The leeches took full advantage of this to attach themselves to my legs. Sandie also had one on her arm but spotted it
waltzing around looking for a blood vessel before it had a chance to attach
itself.
The last couple of miles of the trail are on boardwalk through the swamp surrounding Blackfish Ceek. We emerged onto Sealers Cove, a beautiful beach, in blazing sunshine.
With the flies of course. They joined us for our picnic at Sealers Creek. Sandie
amused herself swatting flies and feeding them to the frogs and seagulls. I took photographs of the creek and mountains and went for a swim in the shallows that the sun had warmed up. The deeper water was much too cold.
We looked forward to a sunny hike back, but found that the mountains were still in the wet fog. At least that made it easier for the stiff climb back up to Windy Saddle. By now Sandie had lost faith in the people who write trail guides, especially those confuse the concepts of “round trip” and “one way” and cause her to accidentally agree to a 13 mile hike.
I’d hoped to be able to walk up to the summit of Oberon and watch the sun set but it was too
foggy for that, so we drove to the west coast below the fog and just caught the end of the sunset. I also caught dozens of mosquitoes while I was taking the pictures. This was very odd as we hadn’t had any in the rain forest and I didn’t expect to find them on a windy clifftop.
