2004/04 Boston and South Carolina trip - Blue Ridge Parkway |

We left there in heavy rain, with me driving the camper and Sandie the truck. We headed across Columbia, and then northwest up I-26 into North Carolina to get as many miles in as possible before dark. I also wanted to check out the Blue Ridge Parkway for a future trip. The parkway runs through the mountains from Virginia to Tennesee and is famous for its mountain scenery. It avoids all towns and has lots of campsites.
We found the parkway just before dark and had two surprises. The first was that there are lots of narrow tunnels through the mountains. This makes for exciting moments when you are driving a new camper and aren’t sure how high it is. The other surprise was that none of the campgrounds were open, and all were gated shut.
We pulled off into an overlook area to spend the night and soon found why the
campgrounds weren’t open. We were at 4500 feet and it was very cold with a screaming gale. Appropriately enough, we were camping with a view of Cold Mountain. The furnace in the camper was working overtime. (Even though Sandie was driving the truck, I let her sleep in the camper :-) )
Tuesday 27th April
This time we had no visits from the cops, but I heard vehicles driving into the area and maybe checking us out.
