2005/09 Labrador trip - Lac Castagnier |
|||
Saturday October 8th
It was mainly sunny in the morning but occasionally snow/sleet showers would roll through. The road stayed in wild country, with lakes and rivers all the way to Chibougamau. The town is a few miles off the road, but Sandie was dreaming of Tim Horton's coffee so we visited the town only to find that Timmy hasn't made it there yet. It's a big enough place, but the Quebecois don't seem to be as keen on donuts as the rest of Canada.
Back on the highway, we filled up at the little town of Chapais and headed west along the 113, a very lonely road with just a few tiny Cree Indian villages, all them grim looking places. The day was bright but it never got above the low forties. The scenery here wasn't too interesting, mainly flat with just a wall of trees on either side of the road, and after a couple of hundred miles of this we took off on a gravel road, more interesting and more direct for where we needed to go. We noticed that there were lots of pickups and cars parked in odd places and people in blaze orange jackets, and we concluded that the hunting season had started. We found out later that they were hunting moose.
We stopped off at a couple of
covered bridges. One was large enough for us to drive across, but it
had a large buckle in the middle, so we didn't. The sun was setting,
and we found a campsite hiding down on the lake at the village boat
launch on Lac Castagnier. We hoped that nobody would notice us, or
mistake us for a moose!
