There wasn't much of anything in the hundred miles to Longlac, except a few bubbling rivers and streams. I spotted a moose in a roadside pond, our first moose-sighting of the trip, but it cleared off very quickly. I guess most of the moose that hang around the road have either been eaten or at least shot at by now, so it's not surprising that we haven't seen more.

In mid-afternoon, the highway turned south and ran along the edge of Lake Nipigon. This is a really scenic area, with great mounds of hills and cliffs running along the edge of the lake. The road runs at the foot of the Pijiawabik Palisades, vertical cliffs and columns of volcanic rock. The trees were also still at their best so it was an unexpectedly scenic drive, another place we'll probably come back to.

We'd have liked to camp along that section but there were no suitable spots, so we drove across the bridge at the mouth of the Nipigon River, and found a road up the other bank. We eventually left the houses behind and found a clearing in the woods for camping, obviously a hunting and party spot as there were cartridges and glass all over, but it was a good site for spending the night.
