We took a scenic tour of the brow of the Niagara Escarpment, the cliff that dominates southern Ontario, and divides upper and lower Hamilton. It’s also the cliff over which Lake Erie pours into Lake Ontario via Niagara Falls. Thousands of years ago, the Wisconsin Glacier ground against the cliff and sharpened it up to create some vertical rock walls and spectacular waterfalls. We had trouble finding all these places as the roads have been changing due to the building of the Red Hill Creek expressway.
The Devil’s Punchbowl houses one of those waterfalls, or at least it would if there’d been any rain! However, I was able to walk along the river bed and peer over and imagine what it would be like. Nearby Albion Falls did have some water, though the falls were hard to see through the trees. Climbing up from the bottom of the escarpment would give a better view – saved for another trip.
