2012/05 Western USA trip - General Grant |

Saturday June 2nd 
We set off back up the canyon, stopping at the rest of the overlooks. Partway up we spotted a signpost for Hume Lake and we followed the road down to an attractive lake with a large resort on one corner. It was another warm afternoon and we took the walk around, and enjoyed the birds and butterflies and flowers.
The resort is a Christian camp but they were happy to sell ice cream and diesel to us heathens.
From there we followed the old road, even more twisty than the main road but without the sheer drop. This brought us back to the main entrance 
close to the Grant Grove, another grove of giant redwoods.
The trail to the General Grant tree wound through the grove of giant redwoods, including a fallen tunnel tree that we walked through. The Grant tree is thought to be the second largest tree in the world, measured by total volume’.
Almost all the trees are massive, but the Grant tree tops them all, and it towers over the rest of the forest. 
Just as we were leaving, we spotted this tiny snake not much bigger than a worm. It was in the middle of the path, a dangerous place to be when everyone is gazing up at the tree tops. We formed a barrier until it was safely off the path.
