2016/08 Newf'land trip - Blue Knob |

We headed for one quilt shop in Endicott in the hope that it was a touristy village and open on Sundays but no luck there. We decided to spend the day driving most of the way across Pennsylvania, so that we could visit two quilt shops in the state the next morning.
Our last section of New York state was the valley of the Susquehanna , a big and lazy river on its way to Chesapeake Bay. As we turned south into Pennsylvania we came to a large and extravagant Welcome Centre. It looked like overkill, but in fairness though the staff was great, very helpful.
We picked a route between the industrialized areas of Scranton and Pittsburg, a good choice as the scenery was pleasant, rolling forested mountains, and the driving easy. Pennsylvania seems to have built a lot of new freeways since I was last there. The day was hot and humid, rest areas green and steamy.
We’d picked Blue Knob state park for camping with the idea of hiking up to said knob but when we arrived there were black clouds and thunder, not a good time to be on a mountain top. Plan B was to sit outside and drink beer until the rain came, but Pennsylvania allows no alcohol to be taken into its state parks. We blamed the Quakers for that, but we toasted them anyway, with our coffee cups of course.
Monday August 29th
We had a noisy night with heavy rain and thunder. The morning was warm and humid and sunny. We were heading for quilt shops in Somerset and Uniontown before going further south into West Virginia.
